Harnessing intelligent video technology to transform arena operations
As arenas become more complex and data-driven, operators face increasing pressure to deliver safe, efficient and profitable events with limited resources. At the Arenas Operators and Developers World Summit in Birmingham this February, Steve Hodges, Director of Operations at Dallmeier Electronic UK Ltd, will explore how intelligent video technology is helping venues meet these challenges, presenting alongside Tom Smith, Sales Director – Security Systems at OCS.
In their joint session, Intelligent Video Technology for Safer, More Efficient, and More Profitable Arena Operations, Dallmeier and OCS will show how video intelligence extends beyond traditional security. From improving crowd flow and identifying risks early, to supporting smarter decision-making and enhancing the fan experience, the session will highlight how integrated, privacy-focused solutions are enabling arenas to operate more effectively today and into the future. What key topic will you be addressing at the Arenas Operators and Developers World Summit?
"At the summit, Dallmeier and OCS will be focusing on how intelligent video technology can support safer, more efficient, and more profitable arena operations. This is especially relevant right now as operators face increasing pressure to balance security, operational efficiency, and fan experience – often with limited resources. Modern arenas are no longer just event spaces; they are complex, data-driven environments, and video intelligence plays a critical role in helping operators make informed, real-time decisions."
How does your company’s technology or service help solve a major challenge currently facing live-venue operators?
"One of the biggest challenges for live-venue operators is maintaining high security standards while ensuring smooth crowd flow and a positive visitor experience. Dallmeier’s video analytics and AI-based solutions enable operators to monitor crowd density, detect bottlenecks, and identify potential safety risks early. For example, in several large European stadiums, our Panomera multifocal camera systems are used to monitor entrances and concourses. Operators gain both an overview and detailed situational awareness simultaneously, helping security teams react faster while reducing the need for excessive personnel deployment."
The summit brings together leaders from across the industry – what outcomes or collaborations are you hoping to see emerge from this event?
"We see this summit as an excellent opportunity to foster collaboration between technology providers, developers, and operators early in the planning and design process. Ideally, we’d like to see more integrated approaches where security, operations, and fan experience are considered together rather than in isolation. We’re also keen to exchange insights with partners on how emerging technologies, such as AI and data analytics, can be practically implemented in real-world arena environments."
Security and safety are top priorities for arenas and live events. How is your company innovating in this space?
"Dallmeier continues to innovate using AI-driven video analytics, privacy-by-design concepts, and high-resolution imaging technologies. With OCS as a partner our systems are designed not only to detect incidents but also to prevent them by providing early indicators of risk, such as unusual crowd behaviour or unauthorised access. Importantly, we place strong emphasis on GDPR-compliant solutions, ensuring that enhanced security does not come at the expense of individual privacy."
With fan experience becoming a defining competitive edge for venues, how does your solution enhance engagement, satisfaction, or loyalty among event-goers?
"A safe and smoothly run venue is fundamental to a positive fan experience. By reducing congestion, improving wayfinding through data insights, and enabling faster incident response, our solutions help create a more relaxed and enjoyable environment for visitors. When fans feel safe and can move easily through a venue, they are more likely to return – and recommend the experience to others."
What trends in arena operations are you seeing that you think will shape the next 3-5 years?
"Key trends include the growing use of AI and automation, increased focus on sustainability and cost efficiency, and a stronger emphasis on data-driven decision-making. We’re also seeing more demand for scalable, future-proof systems that can adapt as venues evolve. Dallmeier is responding by developing modular solutions, investing heavily in AI research, and ensuring our systems integrate seamlessly with other operational technologies."
What are you most looking forward to at the Arenas Operators and Developers World Summit?
"We’re most looking forward to the open exchange of ideas and real-world experiences with industry peers. Events like this are invaluable for understanding the challenges operators are facing today and how those challenges may evolve. Ultimately, we see the summit as a chance to collectively shape the future of arena design and operation, making venues safer, smarter, and more enjoyable for everyone involved."
